What does a School Social Worker do?
*Participates in Building Team/Child Study meetings to support regular education students referred for discussion by concerned parents or teachers
*Conducts evaluations and/or behavior assessments to identify students who would qualify for and benefit from social work services, then as part of the IEP Team helps develop an appropriate educational program
*Provides individual and/or group counseling services as prescribed in the student's individualized education program (IEP)
*Consults with parents and staff, helps design and implement behavior interventions, and serves as liaison between the school, home, and community agencies
Parental involvement is extremely important in the continued success of a student. Social workers often serve as the link between students' families and the school by working with parents, guardians, teachers, and other school officials to ensure that students reach their academic and personal potential. Stress and emotional issues impede on a child's ability to learn. The social worker will try to identify the problem through a systems approach by working with the individuals previously mentioned. Children with disabilities or impairments such as physical, mental, or emotional also work directly with the social worker. In the Peer to Peer program, 4th grade students have the opportunity to share interests and discuss coping skills with peers who may not have the tools to accomplish educational tasks or emotional disruptions in an positive way.
